  • Farmers are experiencing higher demand for vetch over lucerne hay. Previous cereal hay customers are also beginning to request vetch as the preferred alternative. Highly palatable vetch is moving fast at around $350/t and is expected to peak at $400/t in the next few months.
  • The rains in Queensland are impacting some hay pricing. Pasture Hay is not in high demand across the Darling Downs as there’s enough in paddocks, therefore prices have dropped slightly.
  • The next four weeks are crucial across the Victorian western districts, with several farming businesses needing to make decisions about their future if the drought continues.
  • A new agricultural levies legislative framework commenced on 1 January 2025. The full list of industries and commencement dates for their levies and charges is available here. There is no change to existing levy rates, the bodies that receive levies, or the purposes for which levies can be established and used. The new framework is made up of five key new Acts that enable the imposition, collection and disbursement of levies, and disbursement of matching payments to research and development corporations (RDCs).
  • Buyers are encouraged to feed test and view fodder before purchase to be sure of the quality of feed.
